TOO MANY JAMES SHASTEENS

Note that Jacques is the French equivalent of James, ultimately originating from the name Jacob. As a first name, Jacques if often phonetically converted to English as Jacob, Jake, or Jack, but the last is not an accurate translation (Jack, from Jankin, is strictly a diminutive of John. Note that on Ancestry.com family trees, our Pierre Chastain b 1659 France is referred to also as: Dr. Pierre "Peter" Chastain, Dr Pierre Jacob Chasteen, Dr. Pierre Peter Jacob Chastain, Capt. Pierre "Peter" James Chastain, Capt Pierre Jacob Chastain and finally on this pass, Doctor Pierre Louis Chastain. These variations just expand my dislike of the name James!

This is one of the most frustrating situations I have ever encountered
.

First in trying to follow Pierre Chastain b 1659 and his descendants

I swear every one of them had a son with a variant of the name James as well as John, and William — and most had daughters with the common names of Mary, Frances, Elizabeth, etc. — and this did not end with Pierre's known and suspected descendents, it also continued to occur in my research of my line starting in Amherst VA, and pretty much never stopped.

Then
specifically, in my line in Amherst County, Virginia 1785-1792 Personal Property Tax Rolls and Land Records

There are three James Shasteens and logic tells you only one can be the father of one of the other two born circa the same time. James "Pedlar" (b circa 1761) and his brother Jesse move to Kentucky, James "Buff" (the suspected father appears for only 1791 and 1792, b circa 1727) and the other James Shasteen "James River" (b circa 1762) has five sons (one named James naturally (b circa 1785)) and disappears in the family move through Rockbridge County, Virginia through Gallia County, Ohio to Ross County, Ohio. See the following also:

James "Buff" Shasteen (Sharstead / Shastead / Chastain) - analysis positing this is the father of James "J River" Shasteen.
James "J River" Shasteen - deals with immediate descendants
Shasteens in Amherst & Rockbridge Counties, Virginia - additional analysis of the tax rolls and land holdings and deeds.

Preparing to leave Virginia, perhaps to facilitate land sales, James Shasteen was appointed guardian for a Patsey Shasteen. The identity of this Patsey is unknown, conceivably it could be Phoebe, the wife of James {b circa 1762} or merely an orphaned child. Robert Shasteen and Abner Padgett (possibly Phoebe's father or brother?) were also involved. Discussed further in the above files and this file:

1811 Guardianship Amherst Co.doc - James Shasteen appointed guardian for Patsey Shasteen. Transcription by Ray Shasteen.  I am convinced that understanding this document would provide significant insight into the family structure at the time.
Note: A real genealogist told me of the following "typical" familiar names: Patsey for Martha, Molly or Polly for Mary and Ann for Nancy.
Followup, see
1811 Guardianship Amherst Co.htm - this guardianship was for Patsy Casky, sister to Nancy Casky

It appears that James {b circa 1727} the suspected father of James {b circa 1762}died by at least 1832. The 1812 land sale by James Shastead, Sen  (b circa 1727}(as opposed to James Shartead Jr. {b circa 1762} and wife Phoebe is contested in Amherst court in 1832 and names "Robert Shastead, William Shastead, Edmund Shastead, Francis (DIL?) Shastead and Elizabeth Shastead, heirs at law of James Shastead dec'd, (which James?) defendants" in the suit.

Well after leaving Virginia to move to Ohio, the lack of originality in selecting the names of offsprings continued.
L
isting the descendants of James "J River" Shasteen in Ohio, just look at the commonality of names!

The five assumed brothers, Robert {b circa 1782}, James {b circa 1785}, William {b circa 1786}, Edmond {b 1784}, and John {b 1790}each it seems have sons of the same names as their brothers. Following is a summary listing of known Shasteen males in Ohio of Civil War age, cross referenced by the red numbers in parentheses to Civil War Records farther down the page.

Now to the Civil War "James" Issues

This is another disturbing issue that has two parts.

First, James C. Shasteen b 1834 married first Mary Alice Brink and second Catharine Creviston. I believed I had determined based on census dates, etc., that this James was the son of James b 1807 the son of Robert b est 1781 and had tracked him to his grave in Bement, Piatt Co., IL but have yet to get a photo.

Second, another James Shasteen b 1823 d 1871 is buried in Springbank Cemetery, under a Civil War stone I find out was ordered in 1898, but the date of death does not jive with the age of 27 when he mustered in to Co K 89th Infantry in 1862, i.e., born abt 1834. Getting the questionable death record from a cousin in Ross County, this James b 1823 d 1871 was in fact 47 at death, single, and posited to be the son of James b est 1785, the brother of Robert b est 1781.

Third, the fact that the death certificate states he was single is counter to prior thinking that he was married to Nancy in that household headed by Martha (the assumed mother of James b 1823 and wife of James b est 1785).

Research is now pending on the number of Civil War soldiers in Co K 89th Infantry named James (who served with Francis Marion, son of James b 1807 and Edward and Lewis C. sons of William b est 1808, all of whom's ages agreed with their enlistment records.

Oh, I forgot - Fourth, in Defiance County, James b 1814 had three sons, Peter, Emanuel, and James A. Jr. All of the sons served, but as best I can tell, the father did not, but in many places he is credited with service. This one I opted to ignore!

And did I mention that Yellow Bud became Yellowbud in about 1895 and at some point Spring Bank Church and Cemetery became Springbank Church and Cemetery!
Perhaps of use in sorting out the James' of Ross County.

This document itemizes Shasteen and other debts owed to a Yellowbud store owner circa 1866. THE STRANGE ESTATE OF JOHANN ULRICH ALBRECHT —  (Original Link - I have Included the original weblink and a copy here for reference in case the original disappears). The debts were:

James C. Shasteen owing $13.00 and James Shasteen, Jr. owing $12.50 in notes and William Shasteen $2.95 and James Shasteen, Jr. owing $4.50 on account at the time of his death. In all likelihood, this is James b 1807, his son James C.  b 1834 or Robert's brother James' son James b 1823. All should have been in Yellowbud in 1866. The William may have been Robert's son William b 1814/1816 d 1902 or James b 1807 son William Henry Harrison Shasteen (except that he went by Harrison) b 1841. No other likely candidates seem to be available.

I have potential issues with the identity of some of these Shasteens, specifically, James C. being born 1807 d 1866 serving in Comp K buried at Springbank Cemetery with wife Margaret. Too many bad facts, can't rely on the identities without research.

More James issues in the Civil War. From the National Park Service Database these are the Shasteens in the civil war, I have not analyzed non Ohio men or Confederate men at this point as they do not appear to be relevant to my objective. The numbers in red parentheses refer to the list of descendants above and the letters in red parentheses link soldiers together in the analysis that served in different units. The answer to which is which will probably only be determined after more indepth records are obtained. Company in purple is from the Ohio genealogical site.

that possible death date 2/28/71 Congestion Lungs, Yellowbud, Ross 47 y from County Probate
Records – disagrees with roster age. Residence not listed, 27 yrs old enlisted on 8/7/1862 as
Private and on 8/26/1862 mustered into K co 89th infantry. Transferred out on 9/20/64 into
Veteran Reserve Corps – this jives with James at 17-A above as does 89th
Perhaps error on tombstone confusing different James’s? Need actual records of each man?
