The Shasteen Brothers were in the Gallia County, Ohio Township, OH area circa
1812 through 1819.
SUMMARY: William was first to arrive by 1812, was taxed on one
horse in Ohio Township of Gallia Co., OH and appears to have a middle name of
Chester. Because the listings were lost 1804-1811, it can not yet be determined
if he arrived earlier, or if others arrived between then and 1816. By the time
of the 1816 Land
Tax rolls, Edmund, James & Robert had purchased and were taxed on land through
1818. The reference “R-T-S 14-1-22” refers to Ohio Township of Gallia Co. OH
Section 22. (see map) Also, in the next available Chattel tax rolls of 1818, all
five brothers were listed. In 1819 only John, Robert and William remain on the
Chattel tax rolls, and it appears the land was sold as there was no land tax.
James and Edmund are posited to have moved on to Ross County. April of 1819 -
Dead Letter advertised for Robert Shasteen and April 1820 for William Shasteen
(2) an Ephraim Hobbs. All are gone by 1820 and there are no later records of
them in the county. In 1820 Robert, James & John are in Ross Co. OH and in 1830
William & Edmond are in Henry Co., OH.
Source of Gallia County info: Gallia County, Ohio Residents, 1800-1825,
Taken from: Chattel Tax Lists, Land Tax Lists, Wolf Scalp Lists, 1800 & 1820
Census, Compiled by Dennis R. Jones. Lands - 1806 through 1811 & 1813 through
1817 - Chattels - 1812, 1818, 1819, 1821, 1822, 1824, 1825 - Census - 1800 &
1820 - Wolf & Panther Scalps - 1806 through 1816 (Information provided by Sharon
Hobart slhobart@sbcglobal.net and per her, does not include acreage or tax
amounts. The earliest such list found for Gallia County is the 1812 Personal
Property (Chattel) Tax List. The lists for 1804-1811 & 1813-1817 are lost.)
Definition of Chattels from the above book: "It would be preferable to
have the Personal Property Tax List for each year, as these usually contain more
names, usually listing everyone over 16 who owned a horse or cow. These were
also called Chattel Tax Lists and are labeled as such in this book. Having
several years of the Chattel or Personal Property Tax Lists back-to-back can be
extremely helpful by revealing secrets such as what year a man died and the
identity of his widow. Also if the person moved, you can confirm the year by
checking the Personal Property Tax Lists at both location. The earliest such
list found for Gallia County is the 1812 Personal Property Tax List. The lists
for 1804-1811 & 1813-1817 are lost.
R T S = Range - Township - Section So Range 14 Township 1 gets you to the
Township of Ohio. Section 22 would be the piece of land in that township. A
section is 640 acres, so this is just a reference to the Section, not the amount
of acreage.

1817 Resident Land Tax List - On page 77 which gives some explanation about the
1817 Resident Land Tax List it says:
“As mentioned earlier, the researcher should always keep in mind that there may
be mistakes - not only by the transcriber, but also by the original Listers,
Commissioner’s Clerk, and Commissioners. Here is an example of a possible error
listing the names in the Land Tax Lists of 1816, 1817, and 1818:
From 1816 List: JAMES, Robt. & Edward Shasteen R-T-S 14-1-22
From 1817 List: JAMES, Robt. & Edward Shasteen R-T-S 14-1-22
From 1818 List: SHASTEEN, Jas., Robt & Edmd. R-T-S 14-1-22
It appears that the listing for 1816 & 1817 was incorrect, since the 1818
Personal Property Tax List does list a James Shasteen & Robert Shasteen and no
Robt. James, agreeing with the 1818 Land Tax List.”
