SHASTEEN FAMILY GRAVESTONES

Posited that five brothers and several sisters (indicated in Bold Red) settled in Ohio — James, John & Robert in Ross County and Edmond & William in Henry & Defiance County.
Little is known of the patriarch James Shasteen and his wife Phoebe Padgett other than their presence in Amherst Co., VA circa 1780-1812.
They may have passed before the children left, on the journey, or in Ohio after arrival.

This page is split with the Ross County descendents at the top, primarily initially in Springbank Cemetery, and primarily the Henry & Defiance County descendants at the bottom.

Generally, the listing is in descendant order.

Springbank United Methodist Church (740) 466-7975 – "The Methodists of North Union erected a log meeting house on the Swaney road, about the year 1828. Soon after completion, the house was burned, and a brick house, known as the Spring Bank church, succeeded it in 1832. Rev. Evan Stevenson, father of Hon. Job Stevenson, late of Cincinnati, was the first pastor, and was an efficient and able minister. A few members of the Baptist faith assisted in building this church, in recognition of which they were permitted to occupy it on each Sabbath occurring as the fifth in the month. The Rev. William Baker, of Deerfield township, was their pastor. The church was finally abandoned as unsafe, and meetings were held in the school house. The first burial places in the township were usually private grounds, established on the farms, as necessity required. The Bowdle cemetery (about 6-8 miles SW of Yellowbud) is the oldest public burying-ground in the township. It was laid out, probably, in 1800, since the burial there of Mrs. Mary Sisk, wife of James, occurred on February 2, 1801. This sacred spot contains the remains of many of the early pioneers of Union township. But in this respect it is not more conspicuous, than the "Union Church" burying ground, in which the earliest interment was the body of Joseph McCoy, who died in 1811. It is interesting to note that many of the pioneers attained the ripe old age of nearly a hundred years, and two, at least, in this cemetery, exceeded a century of existence, an impressive commentary upon the simplicity of their lives and habits. The Spring Bank cemetery evidently was established before the church of that name, since the first burial there occurred in 1812 - that of Mrs. Mary Evans - mother of Colonel John Evans. The cemetery in connection with Union Chapel, at Andersonville, is of more recent establishment, the first recorded burial there being that of the wife of Howard Rouse, in May, 1830. (The County of Ross: a History of Ross County, OH from the earliest days, with Special Chapters on the Bench and Bar, Medical Profession, Educational Development, Industry and Agriculture and Biographical Sketches: Henry Holcomb Bennett, Editor, Madison Wis., Selwyn A. Brant, 1902).

I have been told that the building housing the cemetery records burned in 1919 and present day records are reconstructions of who owned and is buried in the lots in the cemetery. Springbank (Formerly Spring Bank) Cemetery is now owned and maintained by Union Township.

After William Henry Harrison Shasteen married Augusta, they went to a the German Evangelical Church. – "The German Evangelical Salem Church was organized in this city on April 8, 1877.  Its first trustees were William Miller, Philip Klotz, George Lautenklos, Adam Pabst, Ph. Diehl, Leonhard Wilhelm and Leonhard Kramer.  The first pastor was Rev. A. F. F. Kohler.  In 1881 the present church at the corner of Fourth and Mulberry was built, under Rev. C. E. Clausen.  The church society was incorporated May 6, 1893, when Rev. Otto Schettler was pastor.  Among the ministers in charge since that time have been Revs. J. A. Reinicke, Paul J. Gehm and Daniel H. Moritz." "History of Springbank and Yellowbud Community" page 96 - On the north side of Davenport Lane just past the large, white house was the Davenport-Old Mace Graveyard  whose markers were displaced by the 1913 flood. There is no trace of the cemetery; however , a commemorative plaque is to be place on the site of the graveyard and dedicated on September 4, 1999. The ceremony is being planned by Mary and Tom Harp. The plaque will read: "Davenport-Old Mace Graveyard. On this site, beginning about 1800 were buried members of the following known families: Bazzle, Clark, Cook, Davenport< Kline, Mace McCoy, Watt, Wiley. In 1897 and 1913, floods destroyed the graveyard. Surviving gravestones have been placed in Springbank Cemetery." This was written by the Joanne and Marv who took the pictures. —
I knew that IF we were going to go onto private property, we should find the owner and ask, but with the official road sign as it was, we decided to go ahead on the "lane." We followed this field road, mostly grass, but with occasional gravel, to its end, going around curves, hugging the edge of the woods next to the hayfields. We turned around and came back to a wide mowed area and turned off what we perceived to be the lane. Finally, we spotted some gravestones gleaming in the sun, but knew it would be necessary to walk across a freshly prepared field, so we chose to go back to another mowed row that followed along another forest edge. We could see, though, that there was a gully or creek between us and the cemetery, so we drove back to where we had originally seen it and walked along the edge to the cemetery. It's a lovely remote place with a creek or gully on each side. The Price stones were the very first ones we came to on our right. The most recent burial date we found was 1937. I would like to know more about the history of the area and cemetery.

Other Unplaced Shasteens of Research Significance - Probably related, but with pre 1790 relationships

These are the two presumed brothers who left Amherst County, VA circa 1790 for Kentucky who due to proximity and name are assumed to be related in some manner.
James family more or less stayed in KY while Jesse's family moved on to TN and IN

wife Nancy Kennedy (Cannady) Chasteen b 1759 d 1842 — The owner of the farm where the  Chasteen Cemetery is located, Disputanta, Rockcastle County, KY
told me Nancy was believed to have been buried at a Mullins Cemetery which is no longer in existence and husband James was also not buried at Johnetta Cemetery.
Shasteen, Jesse b abt 1755 d abt 1841 buried probably in Franklin Co., KY but location not known.

son William B. Shasteen, Sr. b abt 1786 d 1841 Kitchens Cemetery, Franklin Co., TN
         son William B. Shasteen, Jr.
b 16 Jun 1812 d 11 May 1896 Shasteen Family Cemetery sits atop Devils Steps in the middle of Tims Ford Lake in Franklin Co., TN
When the Tennessee Valley Authority built Tims Ford Lake, the descendants of the Shasteens were notified of the flooding of the land around the cemetery.
The family did not want the bodies moved since the cemetery was on a high hill.  The hill did not go under water.
To get to the cemetery, one must go by boat.  It is on a section near Shasteen Bend in the lake where camping is permitted only with permission.

GAR Marker - GAR Marker Zoom - GAR Shield on Stone - Explanation found on the Web- "GAR stands for Grand Army of the Republic. That was the veterans' organization for the Northern soldiers. Those small star shaped markers are indeed the work of the GAR. They were placed in a veteran's grave at the time of his passing. Many have the number of the GAR Post on them. Some are of Iron, others are of bronze and still later one are manufactured of Aluminum. Those of Aluminum are generally replacements for older one that have disappeared over the last 130 years or so. To find lists of these markers is not impossible, but nearly so, as each post's quartermaster kept a log of the member's grave's they had marked. You would have to find the repository of your local GAR records. Don't let people tell you they do not exist because in 95 percent of the cases they do exist. Local museums, Local historians, Your friendly American Legion Post or VFW might be good places to look. One word of caution though as in all organization records do get lost and not all post records are complete." - Harold I. Sanderson
