Buckingham County. (VA Gazette, Rind,

named Absalom and Nanne to her and her lawfully
begotten of her body in case any of my grand
daughters should die without an heir
lawfully of her body the
slaves return to my son and daughters in
Virginia. And what many can be raised out of
my household goods and horses, cattle and hogs
and all my tools must be sold for money
arising

Chastain and Marianne to be divided between
them. And I do order of Leroy Hammond and
Peter
Chastain, my son, to be sole executors of this
my last will and testament. In witness
whereof I have hereto set my
hand, and fixed my seal, 7 January, one thousand
seven hundred and eighty six. Signed in the
presence of Joseph Collier and Christian
Burckhalter. Rene Chastain.
-p, 287, 288:
-first titheable in 1730
-Judith had Jean Gevedon, b. 1 Mar 1729/30.
Thomas Gevedon had died by 25 Oct 1731 when
Judith Gevedon had a slave child baptized. (KWP
Register in VHS Collections, n.s. 5:86)
-Jean Martin of St. James Parish, Goochland Co,
bu his will made 12 Mar 1736 probated 15 May
1739, remembered "Judith Chateen, my beloved
daughter" and her son John Jeffedon" and
referred to the estate left by Thos. Jeffedon,
deceased, to be delivered to Reny Chasteen til
John Jeffedon is of age". (Goochland Co. Wills
3:210)
-Rene Chastain, on the death of his father,
Pierre, in 1728, inherited the
379 acre tract on
Jones Creek his father had patented in 1724.
Two hundred acres of this he sold for 40 pounds to
Joseph Tanner on 6 Aug 1740. (Goochland Co VA,
Deeds 3:372) and the remaining
179 acres he sold
24 Dec 1741 to his brother-in-law, James
Robinson for 60 pounds (ibid. 4:11) at he same
time purchasing 400 acres from Robinson of 60
pounds. (ibid 4:16)
-On 23 Sep 1737 he took oath as a vestryman and
church warden. (KWP Vestry Minutes in VMHB
13:178) He is last recorded as having attended
a vestry meeting on 7 Jan 1743/4 (ibid. 13:190)
Shortly thereafter he moved from the parish. On
15 Dec 1749 he patented 400 acres in the County
of Goochland on Pidey Rock (USGS
loc not found RDS Note) of
Willis River (VA
Patent Book 29:70) On 19 May 1752 Robert Holt,
of St. Anne's Parish in Albemarle County, sold
2300 acres for 20 pounds to
Rane Chastain of the
Parish and County therefore said. (Albemarle
Co. VA Wills ad Deeds #1, p. 460)
-on 3 Oct 1751 he had sold to his stepson, John
Givodan for 160 pounds "one parcel of Negroes,
man Will, woman Luce and 3 children, Ginne and
Nane and Olimp. (ibid. 2:314) The same day
Givodan sold him for 150 pounds, one parcel of
Negroes, a woman named Bate, another named Mary
and one boy named Jack and ne girl named Base.
(Ibid. 1:386)
-Rene Chastain continued to live in this
neighborhood until after Buckingham County had
been severed from Albemarle. Consequently the
records of the sale of his VA lands perished
with the Buckingham records. He migrated with a
portion of his family to Edgefield District,
SC. There he died, sometime between the dates
of making the probate of his will and 6 Dec
1786. Judith is not mentioned in his will,
apparently she had died earlier. He names his
sons Peter and Rane, his daughter Jude Winfree,
and alluded to "my son and daughters in VA His
executors were to be Leroy Hammond and his son,
Peter Chastain.
-The continued use of the name Rene Chastain,
also spelled Rane and later Rainey, has
persisted to the present time. this fact lends
credence to the premise that the father of
Pierre, as well as his grandfather, carried the
name.
FROM LITTLE OTTER TO LOST RIVER, EUGENE COOK, P.

-Rene's will does not clearly mention all of his
children. It does mention "a
son and daughter
in VA" (Ren and Marianne)
-last recorded birth of a child of Rene was in
1741 when son Ren of Buckingham Co. VA was born.
-Rene would have been only 28 years old in 1741
so it is probable he did have several children
born after 1741 and before he moved to SC
-The name Martin also became fairly common as a
first and middle name in our line of the family
and could have come from the maiden name of
Rene's wife.
-Rene also lived in Buckingham Co at the same
time as Peter2 and would have probably been well
acquainted with the Allen and Barnett families.
However, Rene's children did not carry down
these names at all and at the most, very rarely.
FROM LITTLE OTTER TO LOST RIVER, EUGENE COOK, P.
21-26
-first listed by name on the 1730 tithe lists of
KWP, VA
-Judith, a dau of Jean Martin of St. James
Parish, Goochland Co VA who in his will probated
15 May 1739, remembered her as Judith Chastain
as "my beloved daughter" and her son, John Gevedon.
-Rene inherited 379 acres on Jones Creek. He
sold 200 acres of this to Joseph Tanner in Aug
of 1740 for 40 pounds and the remaining 179
acres to his brother-in-law, James Robinson, on
24 Dec 1741, for 60 pounds. On the latter date
he also purchased 400 acres from Robinson for 60
pounds. He was elected vestryman and church
warden of the KWP on 23 Sep 1737.
-Rene last attended vestry meeting 7 Jan 1744,
and it appears that shortly after this that he,
his brother Peter, and their brother-in-law,
William Sallee, removed from KWP to Albemarle
County, living in that part which became
Buckingham County in 1762.
-15 Dec 1749, he patented 400 acres on
Pidney
Rock of Willis River, Goochland Co VA.
-3 Oct 1751 Albemarle Co. VA, he purchased 4
slaves from his step-son, John Gevedon, for 150
pounds, and on the same date he sold 5 slaves to
Gevedon for 160 pounds.
-on 19 May 1752, he purchased
200 acres from
Robert Holt of St. Ann Parish in Albemarle Co.
for 20 pounds. Rene and son Isaac were
witnesses to the will of Anthony Chaerbon of St.
Ann Parish on 26 Jun 1754.
-Rene continued to live in Albemarle until after
Buckingham was made in 1762, so record of his
sale of lands is lost. He would seem to be the
Rane Chastian with 4 tithes on the Buckingham
tithe lists of 1773 and 1774. Shortly after
this he removed, with at least a portion of his
family to Edgefield Dist, SC where he died in
1786.
Rene Chastain of SC made his
will 27 Jan 1786,
and it was proven in court on 6 Dec 1786. He
signed it Rane Chastain and witnesses were
Joseph Collier and Christian Burkholder.
Colonel Leroy Hammond and Rene's son, Peter
Chastain were named sole executors. HIs wife,
Judith, was not mentioned so she was probably
dead. The will names the following: son
Peter
to have 2 slaves; grandson,
John Chastain, to
have 1 slave and a horse valued at 10 pounds;
grand daughter, Sarah Chastain, to have 2 slaves;
grand daughter Inde Chastain, to have 1 Negro;
dau. Jude Winfree, to have 2 Negroes, in case
any of his grand daughters should die without
heirs, the slaves given to them to be returned
to "my son and dau in Va" (not named); money
raised from household goods, horses, cattle,
hogs and all tools must be sold and the money
sent to "my son Rane Chastain and
daughter,
Marianne, to be divided between them.
Through loss of Parish records, there are no
records of any children born to Rene and wife
after they left King William Parish shortly
after 171_ except for daughter, Jude Winfree, who
is identified in his will.
